Greening The Whitsunday Region |
1 st August 2010 is National Tree Day and Austr alia 's biggest community tree-planting event.
U PLAN Landscape Architecture, fully supports this event and encourages everybody to plant trees on August 1 st. But why stop there?
To celebrate our 10 years of designing green spaces, U PLAN is launching a region wide community awareness program, called “Greening the Whitsunday Region ”.
In addition to planting trees on August 1 st we want the community to join together with one aim, to plant 100,011 trees and palms across the region by 31st December 2011. “Having an additional 100,011 trees planted will make the Whitsundays a more appealing area to live”, said Steve Moss owner of U PLAN. “Not only that, but the Region will be benefit from an improved presentation for tourism, which has to help the community as a whole”

What should you do? |
Already many sections of the community regularly plant trees, including individuals, volunteer organizations, developers, the Whitsunday Regional Council and Whitsunday Catchment Landcare, but nobody knows how many trees are planted in the region as a whole.

Each week in conjunction with the Whitsunday Times, U PLAN will highlight some of the best and most unusual planting stories.

What good does it do? |
With the community joining together, U PLAN believe the target of planting 100,011 trees is more than achievable, this will not only benefit the community, but it has been estimated 100,011 trees and palms will offset between 40,000 and 60,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions during the lifetime of the trees. Or putting it another way, it is the equivalent of taking 20,000 cars off the road for 1 year.
